Diversity study reveals Hollywood prefers busty Latinas over breast baring whites
Does Hollywood have a thing for Latin heat? According to a recent study by the University of Southern California, the answer is: sí.
The study analyzing diversity in popular motion picture content suggests Hollywood producers prefer naked Latina women over breast-baring Caucasians. It looked at the top 100 grossing films of 2013 and determined that Latinas fare best in the “scantily clad or naked” category.
"If popular films were the only way to gauge diversity, viewers would be completely unaware of this. Individuals from this group are almost invisible on screen."
The study broke down the percentage of the population each ethnicity (blacks, Caucasians, Latinos, and Asians) accounts for and compared that to the amount of on-camera performances and flesh-baring performances.
Latinos account for 16.3 percent of the population and 25 percent of box office ticket purchases, yet they only obtain 4.9 percent of on camera performances. However, the group dominates the rest in their “sneak a peek” performances with a plurality of 37.5 percent.
Such divides in representation concern the study’s authors.
“Hispanics and Latinos are one of the fastest-growing groups in the U.S.,” Marc Choueiti, one of the study’s authors, told USC’s Annenberg School of Communication. “If popular films were the only way to gauge diversity, viewers would be completely unaware of this. Individuals from this group are almost invisible on screen.”
White female actors fill the screen 74.1 percent of the time but only revealed their blessings 31.9 percent of the time. Blacks and Asians followed sequentially with 14.1 and 4.4 percent on camera roles and only 23.5 and 18.2 percent scandalous appearances.
Latino actors didn’t fare much better; they were clothed in “tight, alluring or revealing” clothing 16.5 percent of the time, followed closely by Asian men in at 13.7 percent.
