Brown University to award Ben Affleck honorary degree

Movie star Ben Affleck is set to receive an honorary degree at Brown University during the school’s 245th commencement ceremony on May 26, the school announced in a press release Wednesday.

Ben Affleck is set to receive an honorary degree next month from the prestigious Brown University.

The Ivy League university will bestow the two time academy award winning actor and director with a Doctor of Fine Arts (D.F.A.), the school said in the press release.

School spokesman Mark Nickel told Campus Reform on Thursday the selection was made by the university’s board of fellows which receives nominations from both faculty and students.

He added that he was unsure if the board of fellows selected Affleck for one particular accomplishment, but instead said the selection probably aims to reward his entire life of work.

“Generally these are degrees that honor people for a whole careers worth of work,” said Nickel.

Nickel said the school has also planned a dinner for Affleck and other recipients of honorary degrees.

Other recipients of honorary degrees this year include Junot Diaz, Stanley Falkow, Beverly Wade Hogan, Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, and Eduardo J. Padron.

Affleck most recently directed and starred in the award winning Argo, a film based on a mission aimed at rescuing Americans trapped in Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis.
