[VIDEO] House Republicans attack Senate Dems over failure to act on student loan rates

The House Republican Conference released a YouTube video on Wednesday aimed at pressuring the Senate, which is led by Democrats, into immediately taking up legislation that would prevent interest rates on federal student loans from doubling on July 1.

“Last month, House Republicans passed the Smarter Solutions for Students Act, which would move all federal student loans to a market based interest rate and take Washington politics out of students’ wallets,” said Nate Hodson, communications director for the House Republican Conference, in an email announcing the release of the video.

“Now it’s time for the Senate to do the same and help protect college students all across the country,” he added.

The “Don’t Double My Rate” video depicts students expressing concerns over the looming rise in interest rates and urges Senate Democrats to put aside bickering.

The video also features Republican Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), Susan Brooks (Ind.), Rep Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), Rep Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind).

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said at a Tuesday press conference at the Capitol that he has spent “lots of time” working on a potential compromise, according to the conservative magazine, the National Journal reported, “All are working really hard to try and come up with something that’s good for the kids, young men and women who want to be educated,” he said. “We’re not there yet.”

Earlier this month, the Republican National Committee also released a YouTube video blaming Democrats for stalling legislation that would prevent the doubling of interest rates on student loans.
