New North Carolina state law now permits students to keep guns in cars on public campuses

As of Tuesday, students with concealed carry permits may keep their legal weapons in locked compartments in their vehicles on campus.

House Bill 937, the new state law, requires that the weapons be stored in a closed container or compartment within the vehicle, and that the vehicle be in a public parking area.

The law also marks a weakening in restrictions on firearm owners by allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons inside bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as no alcohol is consumed by the carrier, Fort Bragg Patch news reports.

Several private colleges, such as Duke University, however, have stated they will not change campus gun policy to reflect the new state law.

Although private universities are not required to comply with the new law, they are required to make their policies explicitly clear, reports Duke Today.
