Catholic university to host abortion advocate who said women should be 'beating' pro-life males

The University of Dayton (UD), a Catholic institution, is set to host a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate later this month who has expressed the view that pro-choice women should be “beating men left and right.”

The Daily Beast reported that Leymah Gbowee, a 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, made the claim at a March 2012 Women in the World Summit when commenting on the use of contraception and abortion.

“Why are these women not angry and beating men left and right,” she said.

In the same interview Gbowee also said men should not have the ability to make any political decision on the matters of abortion and contraception.

“You only qualify if you’ve gone through the process—you understand what the process is,” she said.

Gbowee is known for spearheading a women’s peace movement in Liberia that was aimed at trying to end civil unrest.

According to the university’s website, she was invited by the Office of the Provost and the UD Speaker Series and is set to deliver a keynote speech on January 21st, which coincides with the annual MLK Jr. holiday.

UD spokeswoman Teri Rizvi told Campus Reform by email this afternoon that Gbowee was invited to campus to "engage with students, faculty, staff and members of the Dayton community about issues of human rights (the theme of this year's series) and peace."

"Her work of peace-building in a war-torn part of Africa deserves our students' attention, especially given our educational philosophy of educating for service, justice and peace globally," she added.

Rizvi said no student fees are being used for Gbowee's appearance.

Representatives from the Diocese of Cincinnati did not respond to a request for comment from Campus Reform in time for publication.
