VIDEO: Millennials can’t distinguish Democrats, socialists
Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was at a loss for words late last month when asked for the difference between a Democrat and socialist during an interview on MSNBC’s Hardball.
At first the Florida Representative laughed and brushed the question off. “You’re Chairman of the Democratic Party,” host Chris Matthews pressed Wasserman Schultz. “Tell me the difference between you and a socialist.”
Instead of answering, Wasserman Schultz responded to a completely different question.
“The relevant debate that we’ll be having over the course of this campaign is what’s the difference between a Democrat and a Republican,” she said. “The difference between a Democrat and Republican is that Democrats fight to make sure that everybody has an opportunity to succeed and the Republicans are strangled by their right-wing extremists.”
Campus Reform asked Millennials in Washington, D.C., what they thought the difference is between Democrats and socialists and, like Wasserman Schultz, they were unable to answer the question.
Many were baffled to discover the DNC chairwoman couldn’t describe the difference. One student said perhaps Wasserman Schultz “wasn’t informed on the topic.”
“That’s a problem, isn’t it?” the student remarked.
“I don’t think there’s a big enough difference [between Democrats and socialists]. That’s probably why it was hard to actually explain,” said another Millennial.
