Berkeley prof lectures class on 'Free Speech Week' boycott

A University of California, Berkeley professor spent part of his lecture on Tuesday announcing his support for the boycott of the upcoming “free speech week” on campus.

Pictures posted on Instagram by conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos appear to show two presentation slides titled “Boycott” from a Global Political Ecology (GEOG 138) lecture taught by PhD student Adam Jadhav.

“I will not put students in danger nor go about business as usual when the university abets commercial hate under the banner of multicultural liberalism,” the presentation reads.

“So class Tuesday is cancelled,” the slide continues, noting that “I’ll be holding extended office hours off campus that day to discuss this or reading or other matters.”

The upcoming free speech event referred by the professor as a “Hate and Harassment Week” is slated to feature Yiannopoulos, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, conservative columnist Ann Coulter and others.

Last week, several UC Berkeley professors announced that they will be canceling classes to boycott the event in order to help students avoid “an environment of harassment, intimidation, violence, and militarized policing.”

The Political Ecology presentation acknowledged the “faculty-student call for a boycott of classes and official activities during the administration-sponsored Hate and Harassment Week,” but also noted that political debate is “welcome.”

“This is about a shadowy political element weaponizing a narrow interpretation of the First Amendment to abet material and immaterial violence,” the professor wrote in his presentation.

“I welcome debate, vigorous and challenging, among conservatives, liberals, radicals and others,” he added.

Jadhav did not immediately return Campus Reform’s request for comment.
