Prof.: Darren Wilson represents ‘racist, repressive capitalist state’
Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens tweeted how she wasn’t surprised that the grand jury declined to indict officer Wilson.
A professor at Queens College—CUNY has condemned racism and capitalism for the grand jury’s decision to not indict officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
As first noticed by the Pundit Press, Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens, an assistant professor of history, has actively voiced her displeasure with the decision on Twitter.
Cooper Owen refused to discuss the specifics of the case with Campus Reform.
“Right now, the only professional media interviews I give are related to my work on 19th century U.S. slavery,” Cooper Owen wrote to Campus Reform in an email. “My Twitter account is one that is for my personal use and not one where I speak as a professor solely (although my training as an historian does inform my views).”
Dr. Cooper Owens graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles and has received multiple awards for her work in gender, slavery, and medicine, including a residential postdoctoral fellowship at the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies.
“[T]he comments you reference are personal opinions articulated in a Twitter feed and, in the context you raise, reflect the professor's personal beliefs, and do not purport to represent the position of CUNY/QC,” Maria Matteo, Assistant Director of News Services in the Office of Communications, wrote in an email to Campus Reform. “CUNY/QC remains a forum for the advocacy of all ideas protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and the principles of academic freedom.”
