Sunday Opinion: Should race be banned from police alerts?
The University of Minnesota has experienced a sting of violent armed robberies in the past few months, not what you would expect on a gun-free campus right?
Well, it's more of a racial profiling concern to the president of the Black Men’s Forum who reportedly said members of his organization feel threatened when a racial description is issued in police crime alerts.
Apparently, the PC police are now policing the actual police.
Sunday Opinion: The Caleb Bonham Show
In a letter sent to University President Eric Kaler and the vice president of University Services, members of the African American and African Studies, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, Black Men’s Forum, Black Student Union and Huntley House for African American Males addressed racial profiling and called for diversity training for officers.
The organizations that filed the complaint wrote that: “[We] unanimously agree that campus safety should be of the UMPD’s utmost importance; however, efforts to reduce crime should never be at the expense of our Black men, or any specific group of people likely to be targeted.”
Facts and truth should never be compromised in the name of political correctness.
If we can’t describe criminals based on skin color or any other descriptor that may reinforce stereotypes, how will police notify each other or the public of what to look out for?
There is nothing wrong or insensitive about using race as one element of a well rounded description of a suspect in a police alert.
Do not profile, but be wise. Let’s not allow our society to be crushed under the boot of political correctness.
