Amid nationwide campus climate strikes, climate activists took to the streets of Washington, D.C.
Climate activists around the world staged demonstrations to raise awareness as world leaders met in New York at the U.N. Climate Summit.
Starting Friday on college campuses around the country, students and faculty staged walkouts. Those walkouts continued Monday, while in Washington, D.C., protesters took over major streets and intersections in an attempt to “shut down DC.”
The activists, calling themselves “climate rebels,” said they hoped to send a message to elected officials in Washington that they must take climate action, including supporting the Green New Deal.

Campus Reform’s Cabot Phillips headed into the city to speak with protesters and ask them what they hoped to accomplish by causing gridlock, and whether they thought future Americans should stop having children to combat carbon emissions.
“Honestly, I don’t really care about people being inconvenienced with traffic, because we need change now,” one attendee said, while another admitted “somebody being late for work, for me, I don’t care about that. I care about the survival of our human species.”
One protester “what good is your money if there’s no future to spend it on? Why do you gotta go to work?”
When asked if they agreed with the idea of a “birth strike” in order to reduce carbon emissions in the future, many attendees were supportive.

“I chose way back when to not reproduce and that has reduced my carbon footprint in this world enormously,” one attendee said, before another added, “It’s difficult to bring children into a world that’s so uncertain.”
“I think it makes a lot of sense, or adopting. There’s lots of other kids out there,” a different activist said.
