VIDEO: Students say Big Tech is too powerful
Amid decisions by social media giants to ban President Donald Trump from their platforms, as well as Parler being permanently banned from the Google Play and Apple’s App Store, Campus Reform asked students at the University of Virginia if they think Big Tech has gone too far in censoring dissenting viewpoints.
With growing concerns of possible First Amendment violations, students were also asked if the recent censorship sets a dangerous precedent, and if they feel that technology companies should be broken up due to their unmatched power and control over information.
Many students were conflicted, arguing that platforms like Twitter and Facebook are private companies, and should be able to censor and prohibit content and users as they please. However, several students agreed that companies such as Twitter and Facebook have become too powerful.
