Could 'Colonials' mascot become history? (VIDEO)

Proponents of the change say that the mascot is too offensive. Marone says that's just bogus.

Campus Reform Correspondent Abigail Marone joined Fox & Friends to discuss the push at GW to change the "Colonials" mascot.

Students at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. are pushing to change the school’s “Colonials” mascot because it is offensive.

Campus Reform Correspondents Abigail Marone and Victoria Snitsar went to the campus recently to ask students their stance on the debate and whether the school, named after George Washington, a colonial should also be changed. Some students they spoke with agreed that the mascot should be changed. One person even said the school should consider changing its name.

Marone, who is a GW student, joined Fox & Friends to discuss the Colonial mascot, saying the debate is missing “any sort of common sense.”

”There’s a huge difference between a colonial, which is our mascot, and anyone who lived during colonial times, and colonialism, which is what students are saying this mascot is representative of, which is not the case at all,” Marone said. “Colonialism is a political system of taking over land. But last time I checked being born during the colonial time and living during the colonial time, there’s nothing offensive about that.”

An online petition to change the school’s mascot has garnered more than 540 signatures. As Campus Reform reported previously, GW student Sen. Hayley Margolis hosted a panel, titled, “Is the GW Colonial Inclusive School Spirit?”

Citing the fact that GW is a “diverse institution,” Margolis added, “there are students that, if we were back in Colonial times, wouldn’t have been represented or treated equally. School spirit is something that should be based on equality.”
