Prof ‘will not be rehired’ following Otto Warmbier remarks

University of Delaware (UDel) adjunct professor who said that Otto Warmbier “got exactly what he deserved” will not be returning to teach at the university, officials announced on Sunday.

“The University of Delaware has announced that Katherine Dettwyler, who last taught in the spring as an adjunct faculty member, will not be rehired to teach at the University in the future,” the school said in a statement.

The decision came days after Dettwyler, an adjunct anthropology professor at UDel, voiced her controversial views on the death of Warmbier on social media and the comment section of an article published by National Review.

Campus Reform previously reported that Dettwyler argued that Warmbier behaved like a “spoiled, naive, arrogant U.S. college student who never had to face the consequences of his actions” while he was in North Korea.

She later said that Warmbier had a “typical mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males” that she teaches.

Following her remarks, the university issued a statement disavowing the "particularly distressing” comments made by the professor, stressing that they are “inconsistent with our values.”

On Sunday, officials reiterated their denouncement of Dettwyler’s views, underscoring that they do not “reflect the values or position of the University of Delaware.”

“The University of Delaware is committed to providing our students, and our community, with an inclusive and supportive atmosphere characterized by respect and civility,” the university maintained.
